James Martin emigrated from Ireland as an experienced dyer and set up a dye works in Philadelphia in 1838 called James Martin and Company. In 1850 James and his son Thomas J. set up a new mechanized dyehouse a short distance away at Richmond and Tioga St. known as James Martin and Companys Richmond Dye Works which did dyeing. James Martins Richmond Dyeing and Finishing. About 1873 The Delaware Print Works was built about mile from the dyehouse. Thomas J. was succeeded by his son William L. May 18, 1936.
